Easiest-Ever Manicure (Even I Can Do It)
Despite writing about nailcare and polish trends for decades, I’m terrible at a DIY manicure. My fine motor skills are nothing to brag about; sewing on a button takes effort, and my “scissor skills” (or lack thereof) screwed up my GPA in preschool. Thus, when I “do” my nails myself, I typically stick to a buffed finish, as I detail here. However, I've just discovered a polish even I can apply—and be pleased with the results.
Essie’s new Treat Love & Color collection is truly goof-proof, giving you a sheer wash of barely-there color (e.g. nude, pink, white, mauve, lavender) in one or two coats (your choice—depends on your sheer/opaque preference). Because the color is subtle, even painters with subpar skills can get it on with aplomb. Want proof? I posted some shots of my nails, painted by me, on my MediumBlonde Instagram account here.
As a bonus, this polish is also a treatment, helping to strengthen and smooth weak, dry or peeling nails in as little as a week. This, for me, was a welcome benefit, as my nails have just been through a few rounds of drying gel manicures.
Also, because the Treat Love & Color lacquers are strengthening treatments you’re supposed to put the color directly on your nails to maximize the penetration. That means no base coat. There’s also no need for a top coat, as the polish dries to a shiny finish. Bottom line: This is a one-step manicure that dries in under two minutes. Hallelujah.
There are seven shades total—four of which were released this month and are already selling out. My favorite shade: Good Lighting (shown in the puddle, above), a sheer nude that’s like an understated cousin of Chanel Particulerie, the original greige lacquer. However, with the possible exception of In a Blush (which is just too white for me), I'd wear any of them, as they're quite sheer and forgiving.
